On Monday 27 January 2025 we were thrilled to welcome back Dr Veronica Lac (née Cheung), Old Fish who was a boarder at New Hall when horses were originally onsite in the 1980s. Veronica, who now lives in Florida, USA, is the founder of The HERD Institute, a global organization dedicated to Human-Equine Relational Development. Her visit was made possible through collaboration between our Learn-to-Ride Centre, the Psychology Department, and Mrs Hilliker, our Head of Careers and Alumni.
Veronica presented a lecture to students from Year 7 to Year 13, with attendees including psychology students and equestrian enthusiasts from the Learn-to-Ride Centre and the New Hall Riding Team. Veronica recalled how she used to love spending time with the horses during her time at New Hall, and that this laid the foundations for her successful career. She shared her journey of combining a passion for horses with academic expertise in psychology to forge a remarkable career in equine-facilitated psychotherapy.
Veronica’s extensive career spans over 25 years, blending corporate training and mental health expertise with equine-assisted programs. She holds multiple advanced degrees, including a PhD in Psychology, and has developed programs for trauma recovery, attachment work, and at-risk adolescents. Her organization, The HERD Institute, offers certifications in equine-facilitated therapy and learning, rooted in cultural competency and academic excellence.
The talk provided valuable insights for psychology students exploring career paths and inspired equestrian enthusiasts to consider how animals can play a pivotal role in promoting physical and mental wellbeing.
We are grateful to Veronica for reconnecting with New Hall and sharing her expertise. Her visit was a true testament to the unique paths our alumni carve out, blending passion with purpose to create meaningful careers.
